Bradley-Shoup produces meticulously crafted paintings and works on paper based on his own manipulated photographs of both urban and rural environments. With aesthetic allusions to modernism and futurism, his abstract and representational work addresses his career-long theme of expansions and recession, consumption and growth and the elegance of devastation. His most recent series responds to the built form, partly for its architectural purpose and partly for the dialogue among these forms within and with their environments. In a methodical process, he employs extensive use of masking tape, rulers and x-acto blades to generate precise areas of paint that emphasize the surface texture of his compositions. His source photographs are deconstructed and re-imagined to build texture, emphasize certain angles and colors and allow for play between geometry and negative space.

Mark Bradley-Shoup earned his BFA from the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga in Painting and Drawing and his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Studio Art. He is based in Chattanooga and is a Lecturer at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga. He is the recipient of the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission, among other awards, and participates in group and solo exhibitions across the Southeast.
